Hello students and parents –

As we are basically in the last week of this unusual trimester, I must request that you spend a few minutes reviewing option c.  Please check your grades – see if there are any missing assignments that still need to be completed, or anything that you may have completed, for which you have not yet been credited.   It is very easy for me to miss something that is completed late, but I want to make sure that all students are getting credit for everything they have worked on.  Take note that this week’s due date is Thursday, not Friday as usual, due to the holiday weekend.  I am willing to continue accepting late work until Wednesday, May 27.  After that date it will not be possible to change submitted grades.  So, as always, please don’t wait until the last possible minute to decide that you need help with something.

See you tomorrow on twitch!

5/13/2020

I find that I must make one earnest request of my students:  PLEASE!  If you complete work late, just alert me about it.  I am finding it difficult to keep up with checking every assignment I have given in the last seven weeks every day just to see if someone has completed something late.  If you give me a quick heads-up, I can update immediately on option c.  Thanks!

Father Pendzick and Father Jogi celebrated a lovely Mass today for the Feast of Our Lady of Fatima!  I hope everyone at home enjoyed it along with me!  Then the seventh grade had a very nice zoom meeting with Mrs. Lewis.  We chatted and shared some of what is going on in our lives right now.  It is so nice to see everyone’s faces and hear their voices!  If you are  in seventh grade and are reading this thinking, “why was I not invited to the zoom meeting?” it is because you have not responded to my requests for permission to participate.  I would really like to see everyone by the time the school year is over.  Please contact me about it if you haven’t been in the last three zoom meetings.

I will see all of you tomorrow for the usual Thursday streams.

5/12/2020

I hope everyone is well and working on their assignments.  Recap of today’s streams:

8th was introduced to the fifth and final method for solving quadratic equations:  completing the square.  Look at chapter 10 section 6 for more info.

7th looked at relations and functions and how to tell if a relation is a function.  Chapter 8 section 1.

6th began learning how to add integers.  Chapter 11 section 3.

Tomorrow I hope that we can all enjoy the Feast of Our Lady of Fatima together.  There is a link on the church section of the website to take you there.  Then I hope to see the seventh grade at our weekly zoom meeting.

5/7/2020

Great day to stream!  Here is what we covered:

8th grade reviewed all the methods we have used so far for solving quadratic equations, with emphasis on the quadratic formula

7th grade reviewed the slope-intercept formula and how to graph the line

6th grade looked at graphing on the coordinate plane, and how to locate a point

Remember you have until midnight tomorrow to finish your assignments.  Don’t wait until tomorrow night to tell me about a  problem.  I will not be on my email later than 7 or 8.

5/6/2020

It was great to see the seventh grade today on zoom! And especially nice to have Mrs. Lewis with us to talk about coping skills during this difficult time.  I would love to see all the seventh grade students next Wednesday.

Just a reminder for tomorrow’s streams: 8th grade students will need a calculator.  6th and 7th students need graph paper and a ruler (or some other straight edge).

5/5/2020

Recap of today’s streams:

8th worked on chapter 10 section 7 – solving quadratic equations using the quadratic formula

7th continued with chapter 8 section 3 – finding slope and using slope-intercept form

6th began chapter 11 section 8 – graphing on the coordinate plane

For Thursday’s streams 8th grade should have calculators, and 6th and 7th should have graph paper.

See you tomorrow on zoom, seventh grade!

5/4/2020

Hello and welcome to another week of virtual fun and excitement! 🙂

In addition to my Tuesday/Thursday streaming, I am going to continue with the zoom meetings for seventh grade on Wednesdays at 1:00.  I now have permission for 11 of you to participate.  By Wednesday I’d like to see that up to 19.

Your assignments are on Sadlier, Pearson and Khan, as well as Option C.  Get started!  And, as always, please don’t wait until Friday to decide that you have a problem.  These assignments are meant to be very doable, but if you wait until Friday to start, you may find the workload stressful.  Contact me if you are confused or need any kind of assistance.  I check my email several times a day, so I will get back to you as soon as I can.

Also – for tomorrow’s streams, you will need the following:  8th will need a calculator (yes – I actually said a calculator)  7th and 6th will need graph paper if you have it (7th should certainly have their graphing copybooks)

5/1/2020

I have once again extended the religion assignments for the late people.  The last two assignments will be open until Thursday.  Please get going if you have not done them.  I have placed some links above for virtual rosaries that you can pray if you would like to,  There are also some nice ones on youtube that you can check out.  Just search “virtual rosary.”

Please be aware that I am going to make a slight change to the grading policies that I have been using.  I have, for the past 6 weeks, been giving full credit for just about anything that students have been completing.  By now, everyone should be on the sites and up to date with assignments.  I am going to start giving appropriate credit for your efforts.  If you are not completing the assignments on time and to the best of your abilities, your grade will reflect it.   If you feel that a grade I have given is inadequate, you may contact me and we can discuss it.

4/30/2020

Thank you to all who have been faithfully joining me for my streams!  Here is a recap of what we did today:

8th reviewed solving quadratic equations by factoring.  We did some more examples.

7th finished with slope-intercept form of linear equations and how to graph them using the slope and y-intercept.

6th covered how to compare and order integers.

4/29/2020

It was so great to see some of the seventh grade students on zoom today!  I am looking forward to doing it every week.  If you weren’t in the meeting, please get your parents to email me a brief note indicating that they give permission for you to be invited to a zoom meeting, and I will send you the invite for the next one.

I will see you all tomorrow on twitch!

4/28/2020

Hello everyone!

Thank you to all who have been joining me on my twitch streams!   Recap of today’s streams:

8th covered chapter 10 section 5 – solving quadratic equations by factoring.

7th covered chapter 8 section 3 – slope – what it means and two methods to find it

6th started integers – chapter 11 section1 – we looked at what integers are, their opposites and absolute values

Seventh grade – please make sure your parents indicate whether they are permitting you to participate in the zoom meeting tomorrow.  I will send out the invites tonight or tomorrow morning.

New link for Spanish class:     https://sites.google.com/view/st-elizabeth-distance-learning/home

I have once again extended the religion assignments to try to assist those who are not quite finished yet.  Please make sure you read the pages in the book before you attempt the assessments, and keep the book with you while you work, so you can look up anything you aren’t sure of.

4/27/2020

Look for your new weekly assignments today on Khan, Pearson, and Sadlier.

7th Grade:  Please make sure your parents respond to the Zoom permission request as soon as possible.  I will send the invitation out tomorrow and I will only include those who have permission.  As of the time of this post, there will only be 6 in the meeting (including me).

I will see you tomorrow on twitch- we will be looking at some new material, so if you are confused about the Khan assignments, work on science or religion today, and wait until I teach some of the new topics tomorrow.

4/24/2020

I am so pleased that more and more students are getting comfortable with this process and getting their work done.  If you are having difficulties of any kind, please contact me and I will try to help you.  To stay less stressed, try to have a schedule that you stick to each week.  Don’t wait until Friday afternoon to discover that you have some kind of problem that you need help with.  While the workload is intended to be very tolerable, it may be stress-inducing to attempt doing all of it in one day.

7th Grade please make sure your parents respond to the request for permission I have sent through option c.  If I don’t hear from your parent(s), I cannot invite you to the zoom meeting on Wednesday.  I would really like to see all of you.

I have extended the religion assignment until Monday for those of you who are behind.

4/23/2020

Recap of streams:

8th finished chapter 10 section 4 – solving quadratic equations by graphing and by square roots

7th finished chapter 8 section 2 – equations with two variables and graphing

6th finished chapter 9 sections 1 and 2 – metric units and conversions

Some of the seventh grade students STILL have not sent me their take-home tests.  I really NEED those!  Your grade really needs those!!!

4/22/2020

Third trimester progress reports are out.  If you didn’t get one, most likely you are on track with your work.  If you got one, don’t get stressed about it – just get yourself on track.  Contact me if you aren’t sure what to do.  I will certainly help you get to where you need to be.  I am looking into zoom meetings – at least for the seventh grade students at this point.  I will be in touch if I think it is workable for us.  See you tomorrow on live stream.

4/21/2020

Recap of the streams:

8th began chapter 10 section 4: solving quadratic equations- we did solving by graphing.  On Thursday we will look at solving by square roots.

7th began chapter 8 section 2 – solutions of equations with two variables (linear functions) and graphing.  Thursday’s stream will be some special cases of linear functions

6th worked on chapter 9 sections 1 and 2 – introduction to metric units and conversion in the metric system.

I am still working on getting the streams on youtube.  They are getting there.

4/20/2020

Hello and welcome to a new week of learning at home!  I have already heard from a few students about the seventh grade math assignment.  Yes, I do realize it is from what the Khan Academy people classify as 8th grade math.  I had to pull from several different sources on Khan to match what our text covers.  So don’t be alarmed.  If you are unsure of the math, you can wait until I stream on Tuesday.  I will be covering some new material.  If you are comfortable working on it with the guidance of the Khan videos, by all means, carry on.  Progress reports will be coming out on Wednesday, so if you are behind, now would be a great time to see what you need to do, and get on it!  Same streaming schedule tomorrow.  See you then!

I have extended last week’s religion assignment for those who have not finished yet.

4/17/2020

I hope the new schedule is working for everyone.  I think it should be quite tolerable.  6th and 7th grades keep working hard on First in Math!  And there are still a few 7th grade students that have not turned in their math tests from the day we left school.  Please get that to me asap.

Recap of yesterday’s streams:

8th grade reviewed square roots and we briefly discussed what is coming next week.  Please have some kind of graphing paper for Tuesday.

7th grade went over the solving of inequalities that we have been working on.  We did some extra examples and discussed the process.

6th grade reviewed special quadrilaterals and their properties.

Look for your new assignments on Monday morning.  I’ll see you on Tuesday on twitch!  Have a great weekend!

4/15/2020

Hello everyone-

I hope the new schedule is working well for you.    I am trying to keep the assignments shorter than any time you would have spent working if we were in school.  I want to keep encouraging 6th and 7th grades to work hard on First in Math whenever you have some time. The schedule should leave you extra time for math skill games.  And imagine how you will improve – you could be starting next year with really strong fact skills!  That is so important when we are working on algebra processes.  And we are currently ranked first in the Diocese of Allentown – I would love to see us finish out the year on top.  If everyone would get on there and put in some time, we could certainly do it.

By the way – if you have missing assignments on option c and you aren’t sure what they are, you can contact me.  I will look into it and help you get caught up.

7th grade – I still really NEED those tests that you took home.  Many are still missing

“See” you tomorrow! 🙂

4/14/2020

Thank you to all who joined me earlier today on twitch.  I will put a recap of the topics I covered below.  I have made one small change to the schedule from yesterday’s post  – ALL assignments will be posted on Mondays from now on.  This will make everything simpler.  If you choose to begin working on the math before I have streamed a lesson, you may or may not understand the material.  It is up to you when you want to begin working on the math.  If you want to wait until after Tuesday’s stream, you certainly may, but the assignment will be posted on Monday.

8th twitch stream covered square roots (chapter 10 section 3)

7th twitch stream completed solving two-step inequalities (chapter 7 section 6)

6th twitch stream covered identifying and naming polygons (chapter 8 section 5)

Remember to keep checking your option c grades to make sure you are not missing anything.  Contact me if you are confused about anything that is missing.  Also, you can start looking for the videos from the streams on youtube.  Same name: MrsRTurboMath.  Some of the videos are up, I am working on getting all of them listed.

Keep working hard – I am proud of you!  And keep working on First in Math! We are #1 in the Diocese!!!!!

4/13/2020

Hello –

I hope you all had a peaceful and blessed Easter celebration.  Continue to be mindful during the Easter Octave this week. Please take note that I am modifying the schedule to try to make the assignments simpler. I would like to move away from textbook math assignments unless it is really necessary math assignments will only be on Khan from now on, unless there is something special that I feel needs to be covered.  See below for the schedule.

Please be aware that until I get the details worked out, new students on Khan will not be able to access past-due assignments.  Be patient until I figure out how to make that happen.

Here is the schedule I would like to try out:

Mondays:  All math classes (6, 7, and 8) check Khan Academy for new assignments.  7th and 8th check the Pearson website for new science assignments.  7th grade check the Sadlier website for new religion assignments. (see below for how to access this)

Tuesdays: twitch streams on the same schedule we have been using

Wednesdays:  work on all assignments

Thursdays: twitch streams again – this may change to zoom meetings in the future.  I will use this time either to address questions or to present new math material. No new assignments will be given.

Fridays: all weekly assignments will be due.

So – recap – new assignments on Monday only.  All assignments due on Friday.

7th grade – to access the Sadlier website, you will use the link below and the same username/password from the Pearson site.

https://religion.sadlierconnect.com/@919475

.“See” you tomorrow! 🙂

4/7/2020

I have put a link below that has a beautiful set of coloring pages showing all the events of Holy Week.  I am not requiring this as homework, but I would encourage everyone to spend some time reflecting on these events through the week and this would be a really nice way to do it.  If you complete the scenes, send me a pic of your artwork.

https://www.catholicartworks.com/specials.htm

Recap of the streams today:

8th completed the four-step process for graphing quadratic functions.  Homework on Khan Academy and in the text: p 520  # 11 and 13

7th worked on solving two-step inequalities with changing the inequality symbol.  Homework on Khan Academy and in the text: p 369  # 9 and 13

6th learned to classify triangles by angles and sides.  Homework only on Khan Academy

Streams are now being uploaded to youtube.  Same name as twitch – MrsRTurboMath.  Be patient while I get them all on.  Next week I will be streaming on Tuesday and Thursday.  Assignments will be posted on Khan and Pearson on Monday and Tuesday.  I will shortly be setting up accounts on the Sadlier website so that we can start to do some of the religion curriculum online.  I am also working on getting a google classroom set up so that I can have google hangouts and talk to you personally.  That might be an easier way to go over homework questions.

4/6/2020

Hello Families-

Thank you again and again for all the hard work you and your students are doing to make all of this remote learning successful.  I know it is challenging, but I continue to be impressed by and grateful for the patience you display and the dedication to this process.  So many of you are literally just taking it all in stride and rising to the challenge on a daily basis.  I am actually moved by how incredibly wonderful you all are.  I truly hope we can see each other in school again before this academic year closes.  That being said, if you are one of the ones who is just getting plugged in and you are behind, don’t despair.  Due dates are flexible.  I will help in any way I can to get you caught up and on track.  Contact me using the email link above and I will work with you.  Shout-out to all the kids that are rocking First in Math!  You go!!!!  I will be streaming tomorrow, and I hope to “see” all of you then.

4/5/2020

Hello everyone- I hope you had a peaceful weekend.  I encourage all to be taking advantage of Father Pendzick’s live streams of Mass on Facebook.  And if St. Elizabeth is not your home parish, check to see if your parish has a live stream of services this week.  As we enter Holy Week, the most solemn week for Christians, I would like everyone to be focused on celebrating with your families and appreciating the truly wondrous gift we have been given through Jesus Christ, our Savior.  In these unusual times it becomes even more imperative that we maintain connection with our faith family.  Our schedule for this week is only Monday through Wednesday – as the other days I fully expect you to be participating in the services to the best of your abilities.  I will share below the schedule for this week. Later this week I will share the schedule I am hoping to institute after the Easter celebration.  We will start back up on Easter Monday with new assignments.

Monday 4/6 – I have assigned some new exercises on Khan Academy.  I tried to keep these short.  If you are up to date, it should be easy for you to complete these. I have also assigned some activities on the Pearson website for science.  See below for details on how to access these.

Tuesday 4/7 – I will stream using the same  schedule previously published (8th at 11:30, 7th at 12:00, 6th at 12:30)

Wednesday 4/8 – All Khan and 7th Pearson assignments will be due  (8th Pearson assignment is not due until after Easter)

To access your accounts on the Pearson website, use the following information:

7th and 8th Grade click on the link http://www.pearsonrealize.com/

Click on the “sign in” tab

7th grade login information:  USERNAME is your First in Math PASSWORD with the prefix ste – (so if your password is horse3 for first in math, your Pearson username would be stehorse3)

PASSWORD is your First in Math USERNAME

8th grade login information:  USERNAME is your last name and the first 5 letters of your first name. If your first name is shorter than 5 letters, just use all the letters.  I will email passwords individually.

4/3/2020

Hopefully this week is ending on a good note for all of you.  I am settling in with this new way of organizing.   Again, a big thank you to all who are trying very hard to adapt.  You have been wonderful and patient.   There will be some changes made next week.  I will be shifting the schedule a bit and giving some new types of assignments.  I am trying to make this as easy as possible for everyone.  Some things are working well, and some could be improved.  Please continue to give me feedback about the workload.

Submit your Spanish work here:   ivelgar1@gmail.com

I will also be  letting you know what the new plan is for science, as well as some religion assignments.  Keep checking back to look for updates.

4/1/2020

Thank you all for trying so hard to do this.  You’re doing great!  🙂  Bear with me as I work at organizing your responses. They are a bit overwhelming at this time, so I am trying to get back to people who need help.  If you aren’t hearing back from me, I am probably just saving your work and recording what you are doing.   I will start showing what you are turning in on option c soon, so if you feel that I have missed something you can bug me about it then.  I am so proud of all of you and I truly miss you so very much!  I will stream tomorrow on the same schedule I have used, but then I will be modifying the schedule to make it a bit more doable for both you and me.

The link below is for a gym class.  Try it out!  Have fun!

3/31/2020

Hello everyone!

I understand my stream today was too dark.  Sorry about that.  I am still working on getting it right.  I will not stream tomorrow – I have a thing in the morning (don’t worry, I am not leaving my house) and I am not sure that I will be done in time for the schedule to work.  I will be back on Thursday.  Same schedule.  I am probably going to start adding science assignments on Khan Academy.  I really need feedback about the workload.  Let me know if you are having trouble keeping up.

Homework:

8th: p 513 # 11 and 13    p 514  # 15 and 17

7th:  p 369  # 11 – 17 odds

6th: finish the front page of the worksheet

3/30/2020

Thank you for the great response on twitch today!  Many of you are getting on and I am hearing a lot of feedback.  I will be doing the streaming at least three days each week.  I don’t know if I will modify the schedule eventually, but for now expect me to be on tomorrow using the same schedule as today.

Homework:

8th: p 513  # 1 – 5

7th:  p 369  # 3 – 9 odds

6th:  continue worksheet – do classifying part

See you tomorrow!

3/29/2020

Here is the plan for tomorrow (Monday):

8th grade math – new lesson stream starting at 11:30 am

7th grade math – new lesson stream starting at 12:00 pm

6th grade math – new lesson stream starting at 12:30 pm

See the link below if you didn’t get to tune in on Friday. And pass the word around to your friends if they are out of the loop.   Everyone is going to be held responsible for the work, so the sooner you get on board, the easier it will be.   When I get set up to save to youtube I will let you know where to look for the old streams.

Continue working on First in Math.  I am thrilled with the people that have been putting in serious effort.  If you are not on and working – get moving.  I have been playing the games myself and I am sure you will see an improvement in your math skills if you make the effort. Contact me through email if you have forgotten your login info.  I can get it to you.  Also get going on the Khan Academy assignments if you haven’t done those yet.  I will be adding assignments from the text this week, as well, so watch for those.

Seventh and eighth grades must send me their Scholastic responses for science. I am keeping track of those.  Sixth grade students do not have to send those to me – only to Mrs. Garner.

3/27/2020

The twitch thing went pretty well.  I am not sure if I will end up doing google classroom or keep on with the streaming.  I need feedback on which is easier for you.  I will be trying streams for 6th, 7th, and 8th on Monday.  On Sunday I will post a schedule for Monday, then I will probably stick with the same approximate schedule every day.  I want to try to make the lessons short so that when we are doing new topics you don’t feel overwhelmed.  Keep going on Khan Academy – I will try to make the assignments on Khan relate to what I am streaming.  I may need to assign some homework from the text, so if you didn’t bring your books home and your parents haven’t had a chance to pick them up, please contact Mrs. Schiller to get what you will need.  And if you have completed something that is not electronic, take a snap of it and email to me so I can give you credit for work you are doing.

Also – PLEASE!  if you are doing work on Khan Academy – make sure that either your username tells me who you are, or you need to contact me and tell me who you are so you get credit.

And keep up the good work on First in Math!

3/26/2020

I have set up an account on twitch for streaming. You just go to twitch.tv and search for MrsRTurboMath or click the link below. If you click the purple “follow” button you will get a notification when I am going live.  I will try an algebra lesson tomorrow at 1:00pm.  I anticipate it will probably last about 15 – 20 minutes.  We will see how it goes.  Anyone can watch, but to chat with me you will need to set up an account.  It is free, but kids make sure your parents know what you are doing and get their approval.

https://www.twitch.tv/mrsrturbomath

3/25/2020

Hey folks – thank you to all who have tried out the Khan Academy assignments- let me know how you feel about them.  Were they too easy, too hard, just too much of a nuisance to access?   And please – if you are using Khan Academy, I really want to give you credit for the work you have done, but some of the usernames you have do not really indicate to me who you are.  Please check your username and if it doesn’t contain your name, contact me and let me know who you are.

I wanted to go live today with a stream, but didn’t get there.  I will post something here with a date and time when I think I am ready, and we will see how it works.

Hang in there people and we will work out a routine to get us through this difficult time.

3/24/2020

Tomorrow I am going to try to stream an algebra lesson on twitch.  As soon as I create an account I will put the information on here for you.  If it seems to work well, I will be doing math lessons for all three grades several times a week.  You can tune in and watch live, or watch the video later when it is convenient for you.

3/20/2020

I have assigned some math through Khan Academy. Give it a try.  Everything I assigned should be topics we have covered in class.  It will be a good review and shouldn’t be too difficult.  If there are any difficulties just let me know.

6th and 7th keep working on First in Math – I am pleased to see more people doing their First in Math.  Also complete any maintenance sheets you have at home.

7th math – do another page each day of the review packet I handed out last week.  I know you might not remember all of the topics, but do your best and look them up in your text book or use online resources – you can find a lot of help on many math websites.

8th math – since you don’t have First in Math, keep working on your maintenance sheets for now while I get the khan academy things going.

For 7th and 8th science – Mrs. Garner has set up a program using Scholastic – you will be able to read some interesting articles and respond in a journal at home.  You will keep the journal until we get back into school.

3/19/2020

6th and 7th math classes please work on First in Math – I am challenging you to get as many stickers as you can while you are at home.  Congratulations to Joyce in sixth grade for having the highest sticker count in sixth and seventh grades.  I want to see your names on the St. E Facebook.  If you don’t remember your login info please use the link above to contact me and I will get it to you.  New people hang tight and I will contact you.

Below are some links to classes I have set up on the Khan Academy website.  Click your link and join the class.  As soon as we have classes set up I will assign some work and we can see how this goes.
